The Desert National Park is located at a distance of 40kms. from Jaisalmer and exemplifies the unusual ecological biodiversity of the renowned Thar desert. Desert National Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1980, it is a colossal park sprawling on 3162 sq km. It has shrubs and trees in addition to rolling sand dunes. The wildlife wealth here comprises fox, desert cat, hare, spiney tail uromastix and sand fish. Thousands of sparrows, imperial sand grouse, bustards, falcons and eagles migrate here during the winter. The major attraction of the park is the Sudashri watch tower from here you can admire the varied resident wildlife species of the sanctuary. The Sudashri tower is also an excellent spot for taking wildlife photography. Best time to visit is September to March. All visitors to Desert national sanctuary need to pay an entry fee of Rs 100 per person and for jeep, car fee is Rs.100 and for coach fee is Rs. 200 There are three main lakes in this sanctuary - Rajbaugh Lake, Milak Talao Lake and Padam Talao Lake. These lakes are the major watering holes for the inhabitants of the national park. The rich flora of the park consists of dhok, ronj, salai, bear and palm trees. Covering approximately twenty percent area of the park are the sand dunes. |
