Gambhir River originates in the hills near Karauli village in Sawai Madhopur District. It flows from south to north up to Kanjoli village (Toda Bhim), then towards northeast up to village Mertha of Roopbas Block, before entering Uttar Pradesh. The river again enters Rajasthan near Catchapaura village in Dholpur District and forms the boundary between UP and Rajasthan. It then enters Mainpuri District in UP to finally joins River Yamuna. Gambhir River Basin is located in north-eastern Rajasthan, between latitudes 26°16' and 27°04' and longitudes 76°34' and 77°47'. Banas and Chambal Basins lie to its south, Banganga Basin to its northwest and the Parbati Basin to its east. There are two existing and one ongoing Medium irrigation projects, and 93 Minor ones, in Gambhir River basin, as well as some small irrigation systems (covering less than 20 ha) constructed and operated by Panchayat Samities. The total catchment area of the Basin is 4,174 km2 according to 1:250,000 scale topographical maps published by the Survey of India.Important tributaries of the Gambhir are Sesa, Kher and Parbati. |
